The Multipurpose Hall of Igando-Ikotun LCDA was filled to the brim with pupils from 21 public primary schools, teachers and the executive cabinet and members of the legislative arm of the LCDA during a quiz and composition writing competition held in conjunction with Koleade Memorial Foundation.
The Executive arm was led by the Chairman, Honourable Morenike Adeshina Williams, Vice Chairman Honourable Prince Dada, Secretary to the Local Government Comrade Lasisi Akinsanya, amongst others. The Legislative arm was led by the Leader of the House Honourable Gbadamosi with other councillors while Mrs. Arotimi represented Subeb-Alimosho.
In her opening remarks, the LCDA Chairman, Honourable Williams stated that the aim of the competition was to position public primary schools to be the best in Nigeria by continually providing platforms for competition noting that such would constantly gear up the pupils towards improving their performances.
She also urged the female pupils to make her proud by winning the first prize money. She used the opportunity to thank the initiators of the program Kolade Memorial Foundation for counting Igando-Ikotun worthy to benefit from such exercise.
The founder of Koleade Memorial Foundation, Mr Kola Akinsanya in his remarks thanked the leadership of the LCDA for accepting their offer while reiterating that the focus of KMF is to continually empower the less privileged through education services such as the quiz and composition writing, noting that they had earlier done so in the other LCDAs and pledged not to relent in their services to humanity.
Out of the 24 primary schools in the LCDA, 21 participated in the competition with Egan Community Primary School 2 disqualified for lateness. The two-day event started with a preliminary session as the pupils took time to answer two questions per school in English and Mathematics from where five schools would be selected for the final stage.
While addressing the audience, the supervisory councillor on Education and Library, Comrade Babatunde Alani noted that prior to this season, prize money for such competitions in the LCDA had been the sum of N3000 for the first position. He said that it had become history as the current administration whose interest is high in educational development has increased it to N100, 000, N50, 000 and N20, 000 for first, second and third positions respectively. In his words, “this is the real change”. He enjoined all the participating schools to adhere to the rules of the competition.
The top five schools at the end of the day one of the competition were Anglican Model Nursery and Primary School, Akesan, Community Primary School II, Ikotun, Community Primary School Obadore, Community Primary School I, Ijegun and Olukotun Primary School, Ikotun. They will contest for the prize monies on Thursday December 14th, 2017 during the grand finale of the competition.
Comrade Alani in his remarks promised that the event would continue to get event bigger as the private sectors would be invited in the subsequent editions.
