Abuja, Nigeria – Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after weeks of resistance.

According to a statement released by his media office, Bello’s decision followed consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies.

Bello, who faces a 19-count charge of alleged money laundering to the tune of ₦80 billion, had consistently refused to honor EFCC invitations and boycotted court trials. However, he has now taken a step towards clearing his name.

“The former Governor has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority. He only sought to enforce his fundamental rights to ensure due process… Bello believes firmly in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to achieve sustainable economic development and supports the fight against corruption.”

Bello was accompanied to the EFCC headquarters by high-profile Nigerians.

The EFCC had sued Bello on the alleged money laundering charges, with Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja adjourning proceedings to September 25.

This development marks a significant turn in the case, as Bello cooperates with the EFCC.

The move has been welcomed as a positive step towards transparency and accountability.

“The EFCC’s efforts to combat corruption are yielding results,” said a source close to the commission. “We expect all individuals to cooperate fully with investigations.”

Further details of Bello’s engagement with the EFCC are expected to emerge in due course.
