The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has warned against the hijacking of a planned nationwide protest against bad governance and economic hardship on August 1. TUC President Festus Osifo urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure adequate security for protesters and prevent hoodlums from taking advantage of the situation.
Osifo noted that the TUC would not participate in the protest as the organizers are unknown. He emphasized that the Nigerian Police has a constitutional duty to protect protesters and maintain law and order.
Additionally, Osifo called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the dispute between Dangote and stakeholders in the petroleum industry. He advised against unguarded statements and urged a solution to the problem to attract more investments.
Osifo stressed that Nigeria needs massive investment and a conducive environment to achieve this. He urged the President to bring all parties together to resolve their issues and stop rhetoric that could drive away investors.
In summary, the TUC has cautioned against the hijacking of the planned protest and called for peaceful demonstrations. The union has also urged the President to intervene in the Dangote dispute and create an investment-friendly environment.
