Human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has alleged that telecommunication operators are disconnecting subscribers to restrict internet access and frustrate the planned #EndBadGovernance protest in August. Adegboruwa warned that this action is an attempt to sabotage the protest against economic hardship and suffocating policies of the Tinubu administration.
The lawyer urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to probe the telecom companies’ actions, stating that the contract between them and their subscribers remains sacrosanct and should not be tampered with arbitrarily. He emphasized that subscribers should be given sufficient information and opportunity to remedy any alleged breach or error.
Adegboruwa had previously written to security agencies, requesting protection for protesters under the umbrella of the Take It Back Movement. The protest, scheduled to be held across all states and the Federal Capital Territory, has been gaining traction on social media.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has appealed to displeased youths to shelve the planned protest, and has sent a bill to raise the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 to the National Assembly. However, the military authorities have warned that unscrupulous elements plan to hijack the protest and use it to stage anarchy.
