In a daring operation, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Lagos Border Patrol Command at Seme, Badagry, has intercepted a six-month-old baby and three other suspected victims of human trafficking. The victims were traveling with their traffickers, a couple, to Burkina Faso through the Republic of Benin without any relevant documents.
Comptroller Peter Adache, the Controller of the Command, disclosed that the victims were intercepted on Monday around 1:30 p.m. along Kankon Owode Road in Badagry. During interrogation, it was revealed that the suspected traffickers had lured the victims with promises of good jobs and salaries.
The victims, including a mother of a six-month-old child, were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to help reunite them with their families. The Lagos Border Patrol command of NIS has vowed to continue ensuring compliance with immigration rules and regulations and protecting Nigerians from human trafficking.
The rescued victims’ stories highlight the desperation and hardship that drives many to fall prey to human traffickers. One of the victims, a mother, was abandoned by her husband and saw the traffickers’ promise of a better life as her only hope.
The successful operation is a testament to the NIS’s commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable Nigerians.
