The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the invasion of its national headquarters and secretariat in Abuja by heavily armed security operatives. The incident occurred on the evening of August 7, 2024, at around 8:30 pm, when the operatives, including police and suspected Department of State Services (DSS) agents, stormed the Labour House, ransacking offices and carting away hundreds of books and publications.
The NLC described the invasion as a “new low in security operations in Nigeria” and a “sad day for democracy.” The security operatives claimed they were searching for “seditious materials” related to the #EndBadGoverance protests, but the NLC denied any involvement in such activities.
The invasion comes after the NLC’s National Executive Council condemned the high-handed manner in which security agents handled protesters and the mass arrests of perceived protest leaders. The council also criticized the use of “treason” to describe the protests and demanded moderation.
The NLC has directed its staff to stay away from the Labour House until it is certain that no incriminating materials or harmful substances were left behind by the invading operatives. The organization is demanding an international inquiry into the incident and the immediate withdrawal of security agents from the premises.
If the harassment continues, the NLC warns that it may call on its members to stay home until their safety and security are assured. The organization cautions that the asphyxiation of public space and channels for constructive engagement, dialogue, and negotiations will only exacerbate the situation.
