The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) is taking bold steps to address the issue of out-of-school children in the North-East region. Managing Director/CEO Mohammed Goni Alkali revealed that the commission is constructing Mega Schools across the six states in the region to provide a conducive learning environment and increase school enrollment.
During a 2-day inspection visit by the House of Representatives Committee on NEDC, Alkali emphasized the need for adequate school structures to combat the out-of-school syndrome. He stated, “Without school structures, you cannot fight out-of-school syndrome. There must be a place to take the children to keep them in school.”
The NEDC is working closely with the six state governments to ensure the successful completion and maintenance of the mega school projects. Alkali assured that the commission will monitor the usage of the facilities and collaborate with the state governments to ensure their sustainability.
The mega school project in Bauchi, nearing completion, will soon be handed over to the state government. Alkali commended the contractors for their progress and urged them to deliver on schedule to enable the school to take off without further delay.
This initiative by NEDC demonstrates a commitment to tackling the out-of-school menace in the North-East region, providing hope for a brighter future for the children.
