A Coalition of candidates from opposition candidates from Alimosho LGA in the forthcoming Lagos State local government elections have decried an alleged influence the state electoral body Lagos state Independent Electoral Commission is subjected to during past local government elections.
According to the candidate who noted that the forthcoming LGA election is yet another opportunity for the State electoral empire to demonstrate its “independent” as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to further strengthen our democracy from the grassroots.
The candidates further argued that base on the awful performances of some of the elected officials, if the electoral empire is to play by the rule and allow the voice of the people to be heard through the ballots boxes in a free, fair and credible elections the true change Lagosians desire will be achieved.
They however agreed that it is true that he that blows the piper dictates the tune by implication since the empire is funded by Lagos State Government there are possibilities to protect the interest of its paymaster but with the recent autonomy granted to the local government which they also seek for electoral bodies, its time for it to practice fairness in discharging its duties the coalition concluded.
