… To create jobs for its teeming youths
The Lagos State government through
Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has deployed the PAKAM app for seamless coordination of the recycling program, with the launch and implementation of the Lagos Recycle Initiative, aimed at stemming the tide of plastic pollution in the state,
Tackling the menace of plastic pollution, which had over the years posed serious dangers to residents and the environment, is one of the key visions of the present LAWMA administration, led by Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, this has necessitated the introduction of the Lagos Recycle Initiative.
According to Odumboni, “Recycling is key in the Authority’s drive to make Lagos cleaner and livable, stressing that moving plastic materials from the Lagos waste stream would reduce the volume of waste that eventually gets to dump sites”.
He noted that the Lagos Recycle initiative would deploy an attractive reward system to encourage waste segregation and timely pick-up of recyclables across the state, emphasizing that residents would be rewarded for gathering their plastic items and handing them over to LAWMA accredited recyclers.
Already the Authority had already established accredited centers across the state for the collection and collation of recyclable materials, which includes PET, pure water sachets, cans, bottles, etc, adding that residents and other stakeholders can simply bring in these recyclables to the centers and be rewarded he added.
As at weekend the centres had recorded these categories and weight of recyclables collated across the Authority’s recycling centers:
PET: 6,304kg
Sachets: 56kg
Cans: 5kg
Bottle: 164kg
UBC: 23kg
BCC: 39kg
PWS: 606kg
ONP: 10kg
Others: 55kg
The LAWMA boss commended all stakeholders, especially Wecyclers and Recycle Points, for keying into the Lagos Recycle Initiative, which apart from making the environment cleaner and safer for living, would provide jobs for the teeming youth population in the state.
The agency has further introduced a toll free numbers for enquiries on the Lagos Recycle Initiative and how to maximize the numerous opportunities in the program; the numbers are: 07080601020 and 617.
