The Lagos State government has issued contravention notices to 280 property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in Eti-Osa local government, as part of a renewed effort to sanitize the waterfront corridor.
According to a statement released by the state government, the affected property owners have seven days to provide relevant documentation and approvals justifying their occupation of the properties. Failure to comply will result in a demolition notice being served.
Dayo Alebiosu, Commissioner for Waterfront, explained that the move aims to curb illegal encroachments on government land and enforce Lagos State Waterfront law No. 3 of 2009. “Many property owners in Mayegun were found to be without necessary government papers authorizing their construction,” Alebiosu noted.
The commissioner urged property owners to voluntarily remove their structures or regularize their documents to avoid penalties. “All illegal activities along the waterfront schemes and corridor must come to an end immediately,” Alebiosu warned. “The state government will no longer condone or accept people encroaching on government properties, land, and setbacks.”
This crackdown is part of a broader effort to prevent the creation of slums, distortion of the Lagos State Master plan, and erosion of the state’s coastal area. The Lagos State government remains committed to maintaining the aesthetic and environmental integrity of its waterfront areas.
*Requirements for Property Owners:*
– Provide relevant documentation and approvals within seven days
– Voluntarily remove structures before contravention notice expiration
– Regularize documents to avoid penalties
Affected property owners are advised to take immediate action to avoid demolition and further consequences.
