In a bid to tackle the escalating cost of food items and consumables, the Lagos State Government has reassured residents of ongoing efforts. Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Abisola Olusanya, highlighted key measures at the conclusion of a two-day retreat for the Ministry’s management staff at Orchid Hotels in Lekki.
One notable initiative is the recently launched Market Trader Money by the Governor, injecting #750 million into the hands of 15,000 residents. Ms Olusanya also revealed plans for the first Food Logistics Hub in West Africa in Ketu, with three additional Agro Food Hubs slated for Agege, Abule Ado, and Sangotedo.
The Commissioner emphasized the success of the existing Agro Food Hub in Mushin, contributing to a cleaner environment and better value for residents. However, she urged caution against hoarding and unjustifiable price hikes, echoing the Governor’s stance.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Dr Oluwarotimi Fashola, expressed gratitude to the ministry staff and urged them to intensify efforts in implementing government policies, citing the crucial role amid economic challenges.
A retreat facilitator, Dr Adebowale Oyebade, shed light on global mental health concerns, emphasizing the impact of economic issues, unemployment, and social media. Stressing the importance of health priorities, Dr Oyebade called for increased National Health Insurance Scheme coverage, proposing healthy habits and lifestyle choices.
Participants at the retreat underscored the need for improved security around farmlands and incentives for farmers as key solutions to the rising food prices. They also advocated for collaborative efforts among states based on comparative advantages and enhancements to the transportation network for efficient delivery of food items from farms to markets.
