The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed John Mahama’s victory in Ghana’s presidential poll, saying it is an indication that the days of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in Nigeria are numbered.

Mahama, the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) swept to power in the presidential election held on Saturday, defeating Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the spokesman of the PDP Debo Ologunagba, the defeat of the ruling party in Ghana is a reflection of the wishes of the people.

“The verdict of the people of Ghana in this presidential election is a signal to the APC that its days in office are numbered as the power of the people in Nigeria, just like in Ghana, will surely prevail, end APC’s oppressive rule and return Nigeria to the path of good governance, security, political stability, and economic prosperity on the platform of the PDP in 2027,” Ologunagba said.
The PDP accused the APC of “misrule and oppressive policies” which it claims have “wrecked our collective patrimony, opened our country to terrorists resulting in the killing of over 65,000 Nigerians; destroyed the creative abilities of our youths” among others.

“More distressing is that while Nigerians are subjected to harrowing hardship, APC leaders remain unconcerned and unaccountable; imposing harsh taxes and recklessly looting the nation’s treasury to finance their luxury appetites and consumption while arrogantly treating Nigerians as though they are a conquered people,” the PDP said.

It called on government agencies especially the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to “note the yearning of Nigerians and ensure that all processes are put in place to guarantee that only the will of the people prevail in elections”.

Despite the “monumental misrule and insensitivity of the APC,” the PDP has asked Nigerians to “remain firm and steadfast in their resolve to end the suppressive rule of the APC and re-establish good governance on the platform of the PDP come 2027”.

The PDP, one of Nigeria’s biggest parties, ruled the country between 1999 to 2015 before the APC wrestled power from it. In the 2023 presidential election, the APC retained power to rule for another four years.
