Members of the 3rd Republic House of Representatives have added their voices to the growing opposition against the planned nationwide hardship protest. In a statement, the group emphasized the potential negative consequences of the protest, citing examples from Kenya and Uganda.
While acknowledging the right to protest, the group cautioned that protests can exacerbate existing problems, divide people, and escalate tensions. They argued that protests can be exploited by extremist groups, lead to a breakdown in communication, and have a negative impact on the economy.
The former lawmakers advocated for responsible and peaceful protests, emphasizing the need for open dialogue and constructive engagement. They commended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to engage with leaders across the country, and urged protesters to be mindful of their actions.
“We must remember that protest is a tool, a means to an end. It should not override the ultimate goal of the improvement of society,” the group said. “By focusing on the issues that unite us, rather than those that divide us, we can work towards finding common ground and solutions that benefit everyone.”
The statement from the 3rd Republic House of Representatives adds to the growing chorus of voices against the planned protest, including government agencies, individuals, and other groups.
