The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported a devastating impact of flooding across Nigeria, with 29 states and 172 local government areas affected. The latest statistics reveal:
– 1,048,312 people affected
– 625,239 displaced
– 259 deaths recorded
NEMA Director General, Zubaida Umar, presented these figures at the National Emergency Coordination Forum (ECF) meeting, where strategies and responsibilities were reassigned to address the disaster. While the severity of the incident in Borno State, caused by the broken spillway of the Alau Dam, is notable, the overall trend aligns with the predictions in this year’s Annual Flood Outlook.
NEMA is providing nationwide interventions, including:
– Deployment of personnel for Search and Rescue operations
– Distribution of water purification and critical search and Rescue equipment
– Provision of food and non-food items to support affected persons
– Rehabilitation of displaced populations
