The initiative of the federal Government through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), announced on May 19, 2017 that “GenCos in Nigeria are now free to generate and sell electricity to end users in Nigeria”. The Executive Secretary of APGC, Joy Ogaji, said this at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday. This was applauded by the members of Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC). The directive on direct sale of electricity to end users, will address major challenges in the nation’s power sector she said.
This seem to be the last huddle to the commencement of power generation and distribution within the Isheri Osun Community in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State as the community leaders and ADICOM Limited are in the final phase of installing gas powered generators to generate electricity to the community. The managing partner ADICOM; Eng. Andrew Idowu who reiterated on the possibility of 24 hours power supply in Nigeria if only Nigerians will understand some of the provisions in the NERC regulations while emphasising on the powers of consumers to choose their energy supplier without the undue monopoly currently in existence.
Chief J.J a leader in the community said that the community has demonstrated their readiness by the donation of a parcel of land to ADICOM to serve as their base station with option to buy the parcel of land in future he also confirmed that the list of interested residents have soared above 3000 in the week preceding the Alimosho Economic Summit. He further stated that the White Sand Community spent millions in installing all the electrical gadgets from poles, cables and transformers within the community and yet they have not benefited from these huge investments but with this new development there seem to be light at the end of the tunnel.
Idowu added that the just concluded Alimosho Economic Summit 2017 was and eye opener to Alimosho residents who have suffered untold hardships rising from power outages and the pain to cope with huge estimated bills which also has resulted to the closure of some small and medium scale businesses while pledging his company’s readiness to deploy their services to any interested community within a week of agreement while noting that the Discos have failed Nigerians in their acquisition of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
