The Lagos State House of Assembly has handed down an indefinite suspension to Jelili Sulaimon, Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, effective immediately. This decision was made during a plenary session where lawmakers unanimously voted in favor of the suspension.
The suspension stems from allegations of non-compliance, defiance, and an unyielding attitude towards the legislative House. Specifically, Jelili was accused of masterminding chaos in the Iyana-Ipaja axis of Alimosho Local Government in April 2024, resulting in the death of Mr. Micheal Ajayi.
Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, led the investigation into the incident. The committee found that Jelili had shown acts of misconduct and failed to adhere to the Assembly’s directives and mismanaged public funds.
The Assembly resolved that Vice Chairman Akinpelu Johnson will take over the council’s affairs. The management, including the manager and treasurer, has been instructed to recognize Johnson’s authority and provide necessary support.
Majority Leader Noheem Adams supported the suspension, citing Jelili’s failure to follow procurement processes and budget guidelines. Hon. Nureni Akinsanya highlighted significant irregularities in Jelili’s financial records, while Hon. Ladi Ajomale expressed surprise at Jelili’s recalcitrance despite previous reports of financial mismanagement.
