Idah Peterside, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper, has revealed that Augustine Eguavoen has denied quitting as the coach of the senior men’s national team. Following Nigeria’s 0-0 draw with Rwanda, rumors emerged that Eguavoen had resigned, but Peterside stated that Eguavoen confirmed to him that he had not quit.
Peterside attributed the rumors to “politics of football” and agents trying to sell coaches, adding that Eguavoen’s presence has stabilized the team. He expressed support for Eguavoen to continue as coach until the end of the Nations Cup qualifiers, citing the team’s stability in the last two games under his leadership.
Peterside emphasized that Eguavoen’s familiarity with the players and his experience with the team make him the ideal choice to continue as coach. He also referenced Eguavoen’s previous stint with the team, where he was in charge during the World Cup qualifiers.
Eguavoen’s denial of quitting and Peterside’s endorsement of him as coach bring clarity to the situation, and it remains to be seen how the Nigeria Football Federation will proceed with the team’s coaching situation.
