Ikeja Electric, Nigeria’s largest electricity distribution company, has organized a Contractors’ Safety Engagement session for members of the Licensed Electrical Contractors of Nigeria (LECAN), Alimosho, Oshodi-Isolo and Ikotun-Egbe Chapters.
The training, aimed at enlightening, engaging and informing the contractors on the best industry safety standards, is an ongoing strategy designed to reduce the number of third party accidents witnessed within the network in previous years.
Pivotal issues discussed include the Domino Effect Theory, which highlights ripple effects of one unsafe action by one worker, Right of Way Issues for buildings, categorization of electrical shocks, procedures for obtaining permits and outages while carrying out work on electrical installations among other things.
The Public Relations Officer of LECAN, South West, Mr. Waheed Bada expressed his appreciation on behalf of LECAN, saying, “we are grateful to Ikeja Electric for identifying with LECAN as the only association authorised by the government to carry out electrical works. We hope that this partnership endures and leads to safer experiences for our mutual customers”. Mr Bada, warned against the use of unqualified electricians by the general public noting that avoidable accidents had occurred in the past due to the engagement of “quacks” to handle electrical installations.
