Paul Onuachu to Replace Injured Sadiq Umar in AFCON 2023 Squad
Real Sociedad forward Sadiq Umar has been ruled out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to a knee injury sustained during Nigeria’s friendly against Guinea. In his absence, Paul Onuachu has been named as the replacement, as announced by the Super Eagles in a post on X.
This injury adds Umar to the list of players, including Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Boniface, who are unavailable for the tournament due to injuries. Onuachu, initially part of the provisional 40-man squad, had been dropped from the final 23-man list by coach Jose Peserio but will now join the team for AFCON 2023.
Sadiq Umar is set to return to Spain for further treatment, while the Super Eagles, led by Peserio, will commence their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea in the Group A opener on Sunday, January 14th.
