Renowned Legal Icon, Afe Babalola, Urges Police and Military to Obey Constitutional Duties

Aare Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has emphasized the need for the police and military to adhere to their constitutional responsibilities in addressing Nigeria’s insecurity challenges.

Speaking at the 4th Aare Afe Babalola Distinguished Personality Lecture Series (DPLS) in Ado-Ekiti, Babalola advocated for constitutional changes to enable the military and police to effectively maintain the country’s territorial integrity and ensure obedience to law and order.

Babalola expressed concerns that politics has become more valued than education in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for Nigerians to unite in promoting order, orderliness, and discipline.

The commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Major General John Ochai, also presented a lecture at the event, highlighting strategies to combat insecurity, including:

– Strengthened Police Capacity: Enhancing the capabilities of the police force to effectively address security challenges.
– Promotion of Inclusive Governance: Fostering inclusive governance to address the root causes of insecurity.
– Support Community-Led Initiatives: Empowering community-led initiatives to promote peace and security.
– Leverage International Support: Collaborating with international partners to access resources and expertise in combating insecurity.

The event also featured the presentation of an institutional 2-star general plaque to Afe Babalola by the Commandant of NDA, in recognition of his contributions to nation-building ¹.
