Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has unveiled plans to introduce a price control mechanism, ban market levies, and reintroduce the bulk purchase system to make food items more affordable for citizens.
During a meeting with market leaders, Governor Abiodun announced that the state government will commence operations of its Bulk Purchasing Company, rebranded as Gateway Trading Company, to ensure affordable food prices. The company will start operations in four zones, buying in bulk and reselling at lower prices.
Additionally, the governor banned all forms of market levies, except for development and environmental levies, which will be agreed upon and made public. A market enforcement task force will be established to prevent illegal fees, coercion, and intimidation in markets.
Governor Abiodun also promised to address exorbitant shop and stall rents, provide support to farmers and market men and women through grants, loans, and farm implements, and ensure effective waste management in markets.
The Iyaloja General, Chief Yemisi Abass, commended the governor for his efforts to make life more bearable for the people of Ogun State.
