In a remarkable display of commitment to accessible healthcare, the Lagos State Government has successfully provided free corrective surgeries for 50 children with lower limb deformities through its Free Limb Deformity Corrective Surgery and Rehabilitation Programme.
The programme, which has been running since 2007, aims to tackle deformities such as bow legs and clubfoot, and has already benefited over 6,000 children. The recent surgeries were performed at the Gbagada General Hospital, and the beneficiaries also received physiotherapy, nutrition counseling, health education, and assistive mobility devices to ensure a comprehensive recovery.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, emphasized the importance of the programme in reducing the physical and emotional burden on affected children and their families. He noted that the state government’s target is to perform 1,000 free surgeries over the next few years.
The Coordinator of the programme, Dr. Tolulope Ajomale, praised the present administration’s efforts in ensuring the continued success of the programme, which not only provides healthcare but also restores hope to children and their families.
The Medical Director of Gbagada General Hospital, Dr. Olusegun Babafemi, encouraged parents to seek medical attention immediately if they notice signs of limb deformity in their children, and assured that the state government covers all costs for families unable to afford immediate surgery.
This initiative is a testament to the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving healthcare access for underserved populations and creating a healthier, more inclusive society.
