Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed support for the Dangote Refinery, urging the federal government to back the project. In a series of tweets, Obi emphasized the refinery’s potential economic benefits, including generating $21 billion in annual revenue and creating over 100,000 jobs.
Obi noted that the refinery’s success is crucial for Nigeria’s economy, addressing fuel crises, boosting foreign exchange earnings, and fostering growth. He also highlighted Aliko Dangote’s contributions to Nigeria’s industrialization and job creation, despite operating in a challenging environment.
The former governor criticized the current economic situation, citing declining GDP growth, rising unemployment, and increased poverty. He called for urgent action to prevent further economic collapse and transition from consumption to production.
Obi’s stance comes as Dangote faces challenges with government authorities and local crude oil producers, with the refinery expected to start producing petrol in August. His comments emphasize the need for support and protection for enterprises like Dangote Industries, which he believes are vital to Nigeria’s and Africa’s success.
