Newly Renovated House of Rep Chamber

In a show of solidarity with Nigerians facing hardship, the House of Representatives has passed a resolution to reduce their salaries by 50% for the next six months. The decision was made during Thursday’s plenary session, following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance.

The motion, sponsored by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State, appealed to proponents of a proposed nationwide protest to consider alternative approaches, such as patience and dialogue with the government. Lawmakers emphasized that the challenges facing Nigeria are not unique and that the road to change is not easy.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu supported the motion, noting that one year of President Bola Tinubu’s administration is not enough to address the country’s problems. Kalu revealed that House members earn N600,000 monthly and would sacrifice half of their salaries for six months to support Nigerians.

The resolution aims to demonstrate the lawmakers’ commitment to sharing the burden of hardship with their constituents. However, it is unclear how this decision will impact the lawmakers’ work and the overall functioning of the government.
