In response to the prevailing socio-economic hardships faced by residents, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has announced a robust N5 billion palliative initiative spanning various sectors of the state economy. This announcement was made during a press briefing in the state capital, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.*
*Governor Abiodun’s measures include the approval of food palliatives for approximately 300,000 vulnerable households across the three Senatorial districts of the state. Additionally, he committed to settling outstanding deductions for state workers, amounting to N500 million monthly.*
*In a bid to alleviate the financial burden on citizens, the governor also unveiled targeted support programs. These include a N50,000 grant for about 27,000 Ogun State students in tertiary institutions nationwide, an insurance package for 70,000 residents, and pregnant women, among other impactful initiatives.*
*Acknowledging the challenges brought about by the removal of the petrol subsidy and the subsequent surge in the cost of living, Governor Abiodun emphasized the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens. He highlighted the effects of rising inflation and the unprecedented increase in commodity prices.*
*Governor Abiodun stated, “As our administration acknowledges the concerns raised by many of our citizens regarding the rising food prices and shortages, coupled with the depreciation of the Naira, we identify with you and are taking proactive measures to alleviate the impact of these challenges to guarantee the welfare, well-being and wellness of our citizens in this difficult time.”*
*The governor outlined key interventions across sectors, including the education sector, where a minimum of 5 exercise books would be provided for all 850,000 students in public primary and secondary schools. He also announced a one-time N10,000 education support grant for at least 100,000 pupils.*
*Furthermore, the health sector will witness initiatives such as insurance health cover for over 70,000 beneficiaries, including pregnant women, children, the elderly, market women, and other members of the informal sector. Pregnant women under the Ibidero Scheme will receive free pre-natal care, an additional N5,000 per birth, and free post-natal care in state hospitals and primary health care centers.*
